Fatal DECATUR car crash death of Christopher Cox

Decatur’s Coroner, Jim Allmon, confirmed the death of 29-year-old Christopher Cox, who succumbed to injuries after being struck by a vehicle. Cox was taken from the scene to Springfield Memorial Hospital and died on Saturday at 1:29 p.m.

A medical examiner’s examination on the following day verified that Cox’s fatal injuries were caused by numerous impacts from blunt objects.

According to WCIA, shortly before 10 p.m. on Thursday, Decatur police were dispatched to the vicinity of West Main Street and Taylor Avenue because of a report regarding a person struck by a car. Following their investigation, authorities found out that a red Pontiac was moving in the westbound direction, and two people were walking along the south sidewalk also heading west. The police report stated the car crossed into the eastbound lane, then drove down the south sidewalk, colliding with the two individuals.

One of those individuals, a 38-year-old woman identified as Candace Nichole Wilt, was pronounced dead at the spot.

Cox was first transported by emergency medical services to Springfield with serious injuries.

The car’s driver, Issaih K. Flagg, who is 36 years old, is set to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. A request to prevent him from being released before his trial has been submitted. Flagg is being charged with several offenses, including vehicular assault resulting in death, involuntary manslaughter, and criminally negligent homicide, as well as charges related to driving under the influence without a valid license.
