Fatal Cicero house fire death of Raymond Brand (68)
Deputies confirmed that the man who lost his life was identified as Raymond Brand, aged 68.
According to spokesperson Thomas Newton from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, Brand was declared deceased inside his residence at 5701 Caughdenoy Road.
Jim Perrin, the Cicero fire chief, stated that firefighters arrived and discovered no operational smoke alarms present in the dwelling.
Perrin indicated that extensive accumulation was evident throughout the house and garage prior to last week’s incident. This accumulation significantly impeded firefighting efforts and delayed locating the individual.
He elaborated, “There was only a narrow path. Everything else was piled from floor to ceiling.”
When officers arrived shortly before the midnight hour, they reported observing flames emanating from the front door.
Perrin noted that the initial attempt to gain entry through the front door was obstructed by the accumulated materials. Consequently, firefighters utilized the garage, which was similarly filled with clutter and lacked a clear path, to gain access.
“It was just a buildup of everything,” Perrin described. “Papers, boxes, old stuff, new stuff.”
Navigating the disarray proved challenging for crews, but they managed to advance a hose line into the kitchen area where intense flames were found.
Perrin indicated the blaze was brought under control within a fifteen-minute span. During the subsequent search, the victim was located between the kitchen and dining room areas.
He further stated that the house sustained complete destruction due to the severity of the fire and smoke damage.
