Fatal Richmond shooting death of Johnnita Russell

Richmond authorities report that a 57-year-old man is facing charges in connection with the death of 33-year-old Johnnita Russell, who passed away just before her upcoming 34th birthday.

Law enforcement responded to a residence located in the 500 block of Hunt Avenue at 9:33 p.m. on Sunday, August 24. Upon arrival, medical examiners pronounced Ms. Russell deceased after she had suffered several bullet injuries.

Investigators, working with the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, apprehended Michael Sprague, a 57-year-old resident of Richmond. He is formally accused of discharging a firearm within a populated dwelling and unlawfully possessing a weapon due to a prior conviction.

Officials state that Mr. Sprague is currently facing additional criminal accusations.

The medical examiner’s office is scheduled to determine the precise cause and method of Ms. Russell’s death.
