Fatal Kansas City shooting death of Kane Taddese and John Alfaro
The Kansas City Police Department has officially identified the two individuals killed in an early morning shooting downtown. According to police reports, Kane Taddese, aged 24, and John Alfaro, who was 18, were fatally shot around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 24. The incident occurred in a parking area close to the intersection of 13th and Grand streets, which is adjacent to the T-Mobile Center and the Kansas City Power and Light entertainment zone.
Law enforcement officials have secured the scene with crime tape near East 13th Street and Grand Boulevard to assist with their ongoing investigation into this violent act. In addition to the two fatalities, three others were wounded, including a male, a female, and a minor under the age of 18. Evidence at the location included scattered bullet impacts on nearby buildings, and residents reported hearing multiple shots being fired during the event.
“I woke up, went to my balcony, and saw vehicles speeding away, police cars arriving, and an ambulance on the scene. It was utterly chaotic,†explained Richard Ruiz, a resident on the nineteenth floor of the Three Light apartment complex.
KCPD homicide investigators initially suspected the violence began as a verbal disagreement that spiraled out of control, but as of Monday, no arrests have been announced. Social media platforms were flooded with videos capturing the incident shortly after it occurred, and police stated they are aware of these recordings and have made substantial progress in identifying individuals linked to them.
“We continue to urge anyone with relevant information to contact the TIPS hotline or the homicide division to help us pursue justice for the victims,†police indicated, providing the number 815-474-TIPS (8477) for tips.
Meanwhile, residents in the downtown area commented on the increased police visibility, noting a change in security measures. “I was out over the weekend and clearly noticed a greater police presence,†remarked Blake Ramey. “Unfortunately, it seems something like this had to happen before authorities stepped up, but I have definitely observed a difference.â€ÂÂ
He expressed hope that the enhanced security efforts would persist. “There is currently a more noticeable police force downtown, which could help maintain a safer environment, especially with officers present on foot patrols,†Ramey added.
A surveillance camera system was also installed in the parking lot where the shooting took place.
Correction: Kansas City police initially published an incorrect spelling of John Alfaro’s name. This has been corrected.
