The fatal shooting at the Augusta mall took place on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the life of the young individual.
Law enforcement officials, led by Sheriff Eugene Brantley, confirmed the tragic events at the mall located on Wrightsboro Road. Multiple emergency calls were received around 1:15 p.m., prompting a swift response.
According to reports, the incident began as a physical altercation involving several individuals. Tragically, the situation escalated when a firearm was pulled and discharged, resulting in the death of one person. Sheriff Brantley informed the public that the family of the deceased has been notified.
Further investigation revealed that the victim was identified as seventeen-year-old Devon McClain. Authorities stated that six individuals were involved in the disturbance. Two suspects were apprehended quickly, with assistance from mall security and the use of surveillance footage. A search is ongoing for two additional suspects.
Two other individuals sought medical attention, though their injuries were not related to the shooting incident. Sheriff Brantley clarified that the initial alarm was raised as an “active shooter” situation, but it was determined that the event was not a random act of violence.
The fatal shooting occurred inside the mall, near an escalator on the lower level. A comprehensive search operation was carried out by law enforcement, involving SWAT teams from multiple agencies, including federal and state law enforcement, fire services, and educational institution police. Mall security personnel played a crucial role in the investigation by providing surveillance video.
The identities of the suspects have not been disclosed by the authorities. Sheriff Brantley expressed the expectation that the Augusta Mall would reopen to the public on Wednesday.
