Fatal Clear Creek County fall death of Olivia Copeland.

A guide from Fort Collins, Olivia Copeland, has been identified as the fatality following an accident during a commercial rock climbing excursion in Clear Creek County. According to a news release issued by the Idaho Springs Police Department and shared on Facebook on September 22, Copeland, who was 26 years old, was employed by AVA Rafting and Zipline. The incident occurred while she was leading a customer group on the Mount Blue Sky Via Ferrata route at approximately 3 p.m. on September 20.

Copeland’s family issued a statement expressing their grief on Facebook on September 22.

First responders were dispatched to AVA Rafting and Zipline following reports of a climber’s fall on the course. The fall, apparently taking place during a rappelling segment, proved fatal. A helicopter emergency service was called, but confirmation arrived that Copeland’s injuries were irreversible.

The AVA Rafting and Zipline website details the Mount Blue Sky Via Ferrata as an adventure that involves traversing a cliff face, incorporating elements such as rappelling, suspension bridges, iron supports, and zipline crossings.

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and the Division of Oil and Public Safety, Amusement Rides and Devices Regulations are conducting an investigation into the accident. AVA Rafting and Zipline is also mandated to report the incident to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
