Virginia State Police reported a single fatality and multiple minor injuries resulting from a collision Thursday afternoon in Rockbridge County. The incident took place at 5:08 p.m. on the northbound section of Interstate 81, specifically at mile marker 181.

According to authorities, ten motor vehicles were involved in the accident. This included six large trucks, three standard passenger cars, and one specialized medical transport vehicle which was confirmed to be empty of occupants at the time.

The deceased individual, identified as Abdiqadir Ahmed Nur, a 36-year-old from Shakopee, Minnesota, was located in the final vehicle involved in the pileup.

Investigators believe the crash was likely triggered by heavy rainfall, which caused traffic to slow considerably due to a preceding two-vehicle accident. This initial slowdown led to a domino effect where drivers rear-ended the vehicles ahead of them, causing a chain reaction.

A helicopter was dispatched to assist with the medical transport driver who suffered severe injuries, but flight back to Roanoke Memorial Hospital was postponed due to unsafe weather conditions. Subsequently, the injured driver was transported to Rockbridge Community Hospital via ground ambulance.
