Fatal DEATSVILLE, Ala. car crash death of Matthew Palmgren

A man identified as Matthew Palmgren was killed in a car accident in Alabama this week, more than a decade after his wife was found deceased in a suspected car crash following her disappearance.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported that Matthew Palmgren, aged 54, passed away Wednesday when the pickup truck he was controlling departed the roadway and overturned. The incident occurred on Alabama Highway 111 near Wetumpka.

Palmgren had resided in Wetumpka for several years. However, he was also recognized for his time spent living with his spouse, Gail, and their offspring in Signal Mountain, Tennessee, located near Chattanooga. After the date of April 30th, 2011, the Palmgren family became the focal point of local interest upon the mysterious vanishing of Gail. Her remains were eventually located within a wrecked Jeep near their Signal Mountain home several months later.

According to reports from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, data retrieved from the vehicle’s flight recorder indicated that Gail Palmgren had transported her children to school before driving down the road for 23 minutes. At that point, her husband allegedly struck a large rock, causing the Jeep to overturn and resulting in her death after she fell 350 feet from the edge of a steep drop.

WRCB, the NBC affiliate in Chattanooga, stated that law enforcement at that time determined that Gail Palmgren’s cause of death was due to not wearing a seatbelt during the incident. Similarly, Matthew Palmgren was reported not to have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of his own accident.

Although Matthew Palmgren was never considered a suspect or formally accused concerning his wife’s disappearance, he was the subject of suspicion by some people. This was partly due to several domestic telephone calls that prompted police responses to their residence before she went missing.
