Fatal Blythewood shooting death of Maria Canales

Richland County authorities have confirmed the identity of a 70-year-old woman whose death resulted from a shooting in Blythewood last Monday.

The victim has been identified as Maria Canales by local officials.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 43-year-old Fred Gause Jr. in connection with charges including murder, an attempt to murder, and possessing a weapon during a violent crime.

Gause is suspected of firing shots that resulted in the death of Maria Canales and injured others at a residence on Haygood Road on Monday afternoon.

He is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
