Fatal Darlington County fire death of Perseus Lonnie Grice
Investigators have confirmed the identity of the individual discovered deceased within a mobile dwelling subsequent to a fire incident in Darlington County. The official determination by the county’s Coroner, J. Todd Hardee, classified the demise as a homicide. The conflagration occurred during the early evening hours of September 18, around 11:30 p.m., at a property situated on Eagle Point Drive, in proximity to Turnpike Road.
Law enforcement officers have indicted Jody Hairston with charges encompassing homicide and the unlawful possession of burglary implements in relation to Grice’s passing. Hairston is currently confined at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center since his capture on Friday. Upon his apprehension, he was formally accused of multiple offenses, including two counts of armed robbery, an instance of first-degree arson, a first-degree burglary charge, two counts concerning the unlawful carrying of a weapon during a violent transgression, and a conviction for grand larceny.
According to the arrest documents, Hairston is alleged to have committed the assault by piercing Grice’s neck with a blade inside the residence on Eagle Point Drive. Following this violent act, he ignited a blaze in the kitchen area before absconding with Grice’s 2016 Ford Fusion and making his escape.
Law enforcement personnel reported that the alleged criminal activities of Hairston commenced shortly before 11:00 p.m. on September 18. Initially, officers were dispatched to a residence on Baytree Road in the Florence vicinity due to a report of an armed robbery. Upon their arrival, the homeowners recounted an incident where an individual had entered their driveway, brandishing a weapon, and extorted them for personal belongings. This individual subsequently departed on foot and abandoned their vehicle.
The responding deputies subsequently traced the abandoned automobile to Eagle Point Drive, leading them to the location where Grice was found lifeless inside the mobile home. Further examination by investigators revealed that Grice had suffered a violent attack prior to the structure being engulfed in flames and his automobile being stolen.
Hairston’s latest apprehension occurred on Friday, stemming from another burglary notification received at a property on Turnpike Road. As of Saturday, his legal status remains that of an incarcerated individual, with bond proceedings unsuccessful.
