Fatal Council Bluffs drowning death of Steven Garland
Law enforcement officials have officially confirmed that the body pulled from the Missouri River the previous week belonged to 40-year-old Steven Garland from Omaha, Nebraska.
On Friday afternoon, emergency services were dispatched by the Council Bluffs Police and Fire Departments following a distress call from a watercraft operator who spotted what appeared to be a body floating in the river. Responding teams located the remains in a small side channel on the Iowa side of the river, positioned opposite Freedom Park in Omaha.
Fire Department staff from Council Bluffs managed the recovery operation and transported the body to the closest boat access point. At that location, detectives from the local police force’s investigative unit initiated an examination into the fatal incident.
Mr. Garland’s body was then sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Investigators are seeking information from anyone who might have had contact with Steven Garland in the recent past. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact the Criminal Investigation Division at 712-328-4728.
