Paige Buckner, a 9-year-old girl, and her mother, Latasha Brown, 45, were killed following a shooting and subsequent house fire in St. Louis.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reported that firefighters responded to a blaze at a residence on December 21. After extinguishing the fire, emergency personnel discovered both Brown and her daughter had been shot.

Authorities confirmed on Monday that Buckner succumbed to her injuries. The following day, officials announced that her mother, Brown, also died from the wounds sustained in the incident.

Investigators say preliminary findings suggest the shooting occurred inside the home before the fire was set. Police continue to search for the individual responsible for this tragic event.
