Fatal Madison County deputy-involved shooting death of Landon Smith – Obituary

Landon Smith, 26, of Madison County, died following a confrontation with law enforcement on December 17 along North County Line Road.

Authorities say the Madison County Sheriff’s Office was searching for Smith shortly after 3:30 a.m. after reports of a domestic incident and a stolen vehicle earlier that night. Deputies believed Smith was armed and possibly intending to provoke a police-involved shooting. Assistance from Bonneville County was requested as the search extended toward the Idaho Falls area.

Smith’s vehicle was later located and followed by deputies on North Yellowstone Highway. The pursuit continued onto County Line Road, where a deputy used a PIT maneuver to stop the car, causing it to leave the roadway. During the encounter, Smith reportedly fired at deputies, who returned fire. Smith sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound; it remains unclear whether the injury was self-inflicted or caused by deputies.

Emergency responders treated Smith at the scene and transported him to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. He was declared brain dead on December 21 and pronounced deceased the following day. No deputies were injured, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
