Perry Sellars, 44, was fatally shot by law enforcement officers on Sunday in Vancouver, Washington, after an incident that prompted a state investigation. Authorities say the shooting occurred following reports that Sellars had held a woman at gunpoint.

Vancouver police and the Washington Office of Independent Investigation (OII) are reviewing the events leading up to the confrontation. Callers reported that Sellars, outside a residence, pointed a firearm at a woman inside and discharged at least one round before officers arrived. A confrontation ensued when law enforcement arrived on the scene.

Sellars was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Officers involved in the shooting, including two who discharged their weapons and one who witnessed the incident, were placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol.

Authorities noted that Sellars had a criminal history, including over 15 years in prison for a 1997 manslaughter conviction in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The OII plans to release a full report, including details on officer training and Sellars’ background, within 120 days for subsequent review by a prosecutor.
