Fatal Dunbogan Beach drowning death of Melissa Austin – Obituary
Melissa Austin, a 45-year-old Sydney mother of two, has been identified as the woman who tragically lost her life in a drowning incident on New Year’s Day along the NSW Mid-North Coast.
Emergency services were called to Dunbogan Beach at about 3:00 p.m. on Thursday after reports that a woman had been pulled from the water. Members of the public immediately began administering first aid while awaiting paramedics.
Despite extensive lifesaving efforts, Austin could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Berowra Heights resident was well known in her community as a hairdresser and the owner of Mel’s Hair and Beauty, a popular local salon. The business confirmed her passing in a social media post, announcing its temporary closure as family and staff grieve the loss.
Friends and clients described Austin as a kind and beautiful person who will be deeply missed.
Her death comes amid a series of drownings along New South Wales and Queensland beaches over the New Year period. Surf Life Saving NSW reported dozens of rescues in recent days as dangerous surf conditions forced the closure of many beaches.
Authorities continue to urge beachgoers to exercise caution, respect ocean conditions, and swim only between the red and yellow flags at patrolled locations.
