Hargill, Texas Man Jose Ascencion Lopez Jr. Arrested in Hidalgo County for Murder
HARGILL, TEXAS — Jose Ascencion Lopez Jr., a 23-year-old resident of Hargill, was arrested in Hidalgo County in connection with a fatal shooting that left a man dead Thursday evening.
According to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, Lopez Jr. was taken into custody and formally arraigned Thursday afternoon at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center. Authorities say the incident occurred Thursday night near the intersection of 5th Street and Gill Avenue and involved a shooting following a dispute.
Investigators said deputies responded to the area around 8:17 p.m. after reports of a vehicle crash. At the scene, officers found 41-year-old David Adam Garza suffering from gunshot wounds and without a pulse. A preliminary investigation revealed Garza had been involved in a fight a few blocks away in the 600 block of Couch Street, where the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots at Garza’s vehicle as he was leaving the area.
Garza continued driving before crashing into a tree along Gill Street. He was removed from the vehicle by witnesses, but was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lopez Jr. was transported to the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center and is currently facing a charge of murder, a first-degree felony. His bond was set at $1.5 million.
