Fatal Newburgh, New York car crash death of Marcus Burks – Obituary
Marcus Burks, 39, of Newburgh, New York, died early January 1 after a high-speed police chase ended in a collision on Broadway in the City of Newburgh, authorities reported. The incident began around 10:30 p.m. when a state trooper observed Burks driving a 2012 Volkswagen eastbound on Route 17K in violation of traffic laws.
When the trooper attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Burks fled, leading police on a short pursuit into the city. The chase was terminated after two minutes, but Burks continued speeding and struck a 2002 Toyota that was turning left from a business driveway near 575 Broadway.
Burks was taken into custody at the scene but became unresponsive and was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 19-year-old driver of the Toyota and a 20-year-old passenger were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Newburgh City Police and the State Attorney General’s Office assisted with the incident. The State Police continue to investigate the crash and are asking anyone who witnessed it to contact the Montgomery Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-344-5300.
