Stephen McCahill, a well-known community figure in County Donegal, has died following a violent assault at a home in the Ardara area, a death that has left the local community in shock and mourning.
Emergency services were called to a residence in Ardara at approximately 3:50 a.m. on Monday, where Mr McCahill, a man in his 60s, was found seriously injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Gardaà confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. A man in his 30s has been arrested and is currently being detained.
Tributes have poured in from across Donegal, highlighting Mr McCahill’s lifelong dedication to community development and public service. He was named Donegal Person of the Year in 2016 and previously served as chairman of the Ardara Heritage Centre and Ardara Community Centre. He also held multiple leadership roles within Ardara Parish Council.
Local organisations and representatives described him as generous with his time, deeply supportive of community initiatives, and someone whose encouragement and positivity left a lasting impact. Community groups in Glenties and Ardara said his loss will be felt far beyond his hometown.
GAA club Ard na Ratha also paid tribute, announcing the suspension of all club activities as a mark of respect and extending condolences to Mr McCahill’s family, friends, and the wider community as they grieve his sudden and tragic death.
