Pearl Chavez, a 22-year-old woman from Marina, California, was killed Monday morning in a head-on collision on Highway 1 just outside Castroville, authorities confirmed.

The California Highway Patrol reported that around 6:16 a.m., a gray Acura traveling southbound and a red Volkswagen traveling northbound collided head-on near Highway 183. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with major injuries, but Chavez later died from the injuries she sustained in the crash.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office identified Chavez as the deceased. Investigators are still determining the cause of the collision, including whether drugs or alcohol played a role. The roadway was cleared by 8:17 a.m. following the incident.
