Fatal Martin, Tenn. shooting death of Derrick Bonham – Obituary
Derrick Bonham, a deputy with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office, was fatally shot while responding to a possible shots-fired incident in Martin, Tennessee, early Friday morning, January 30.
According to the Weakley County EMA, Bonham, a dedicated law enforcement officer, was called to the Days Inn on the 800 block of University Street around 2:51 a.m. following reports of a disturbance and possible gunfire. Deputies and Martin Police officers quickly responded.
Upon arriving at the scene at approximately 3:09 a.m., deputies spotted a vehicle leaving the nearby Pocket’s gas station. The driver reportedly fired at the law enforcement personnel, striking Deputy Bonham. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said a suspect was taken into custody at the scene, and a female passenger in the vehicle is also in custody, awaiting formal charges in another county. Police emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations has been requested to lead the investigation, and officials have not released further details at this time.
