Fatal Oswego house explosion death of James Fitzmaurice Sr. and Virgie Fitzmaurice – Obituary

OSWEGO, IL — The Kendall County Coroner’s Office has identified the couple who perished when their home exploded Thursday evening due to a suspected natural gas leak. James Fitzmaurice Sr., 64, and Virgie Fitzmaurice, 62, were found dead inside their residence in the Fox Chase subdivision.

Officials stated that positive identification and confirmation of the cause and manner of death will require further forensic analysis and autopsy.

Responding crews arrived at 5:06 p.m. to a report of a house explosion with potential occupants trapped inside. They found a fully collapsed two-story wood-frame home engulfed in flames. While firefighters managed to bring most of the fire under control, a natural gas line continued to burn until Nicor crews were able to safely clamp it off.

Initial reports noted two residents were missing, and an exhaustive search of the debris later confirmed both had died. The precise reason for the explosion remains under investigation.

The Oswego Fire Protection District expressed condolences to the victims’ family, emphasizing the community’s support during this tragic time. Village President Ryan Kauffman released a statement extending sympathies to friends and relatives while praising first responders for their bravery and dedication in challenging conditions. He highlighted the community’s resilience and commitment to supporting one another in the aftermath of such a devastating event.
