Fatal Millbrook, Alabama camper fire death of Keith Alan Wilbanks – Obituary

Officials in Millbrook are investigating a deadly camper fire that claimed the life of Keith Alan Wilbanks on Tuesday afternoon.

Fire Marshal Captain Doyle Campbell with the Millbrook Fire Department said the incident occurred at approximately 12:48 p.m. at the K and K Camping Center, located just off Interstate 65. When firefighters arrived, they found one camper about 75% consumed by fire, with strong winds pushing the flames toward a nearby camper.

Crews worked quickly and were able to bring the fire under control within 11 minutes. During their response, firefighters discovered Wilbanks, 64, inside the second camper that had been affected by the spreading fire.

An autopsy completed on Wednesday determined that Wilbanks died due to smoke inhalation and exposure. Authorities stated that the initial fire was accidental and was caused by an electric heating fireplace.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing as officials continue to review all contributing factors.
