Fatal Miami shooting death of Desiree Gonzalez – Obituary

Desiree Gonzalez, 39, was fatally shot while leaving a convenience store in Little Havana in late December, Miami police reported. The incident took place just before noon on Dec. 27 at the Habibi Mini Market, located at 1810 Southwest Third Street.

Authorities say Gonzalez was an unintended victim when 18-year-old Jeferzon Mendoza, riding a motorized bicycle, opened fire. Gonzalez was struck in the neck and transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she passed away the following day.

Police explained that Mendoza and another youth targeted two men walking nearby, and Gonzalez happened to be in the vicinity at the wrong moment.

Security footage reviewed by investigators showed the two young men on motorized bikes confront the intended targets on foot, exchange words, and then open fire before fleeing the scene. Mendoza was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
