Fatal Chicago shooting death of Kiara Jenkins – Obituary

Kiara Jenkins, a mother of five, was found shot to death in a Woodlawn alley on Jan. 18, raising questions about the police response, neighbors say. The incident occurred near 64th and Drexel around 4:30 a.m., shortly after gunfire was heard in the area.

An off-duty Chicago police officer who lives nearby called 911 immediately after hearing at least five shots, providing the location and even a badge number to ensure the scene was checked. Despite this, Jenkins’ body was not discovered until roughly 10 hours later. Police have not explained why the initial shots-fired call, logged at 4:54 a.m., was cleared shortly after officers arrived.

Neighbors expressed frustration, noting that many security cameras in the alley would have recorded any police vehicles entering the area during that time, yet no such footage exists. Some residents also reported hearing a car alarm going off for more than 40 minutes after the shooting, raising concerns about Jenkins’ final moments and whether immediate police presence could have changed the outcome.

Jenkins’ car, purse, and identification were found at the scene, though details about her keys remain unclear. Authorities have yet to make any arrests in the case. Community members continue to demand answers about the delay in police response and what occurred during the critical hours following the shooting.
