Fatal Carver shooting death of Benjamin Cowart – Obituary

Benjamin Cowart, a 27-year-old man from Brockton, was killed during a shooting that erupted Saturday night at a child’s birthday party in Carver, according to Plymouth County authorities. The violence unfolded at the Saint John the Baptist Club on Silva Street, where several people had gathered for the celebration.

Prosecutors said Carver Police began receiving multiple 911 calls around 7:21 p.m. reporting that several individuals had been shot inside the venue. Responding officers and other law enforcement agencies found four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Cowart was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second victim, identified as 20-year-old Jalen Pina of Middleborough, was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, where he later died from his injuries. Two other men, ages 28 and 32, were taken to separate hospitals with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

Police located the suspected shooter, 23-year-old Nicholas Meuse of Plymouth, a short distance from the club shortly after the incident. He was taken into custody at the scene and later transported to the Carver Police Department. Investigators indicated that everyone involved was known to one another.

Meuse is expected to be arraigned in Wareham District Court on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and several firearms-related offenses. The case remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police and Carver Police.

Cowart’s family and friends have since created a GoFundMe fundraiser in his memory, describing him as a deeply loved individual whose warmth, laughter, and presence left a lasting mark on those who knew him.
