Ella Day Brooke, 22, an Australian national, has died following a ski lift accident at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Otari, Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Brooke was confirmed dead on Sunday after being hospitalized in critical condition.
Local authorities reported that the incident occurred around 9 a.m. Friday as Brooke rode a chair returning from the top station of the resort. Staff stopped the lift to assist her, but she suffered severe injuries during the accident.
The ski lift operator, Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co., said that the buckle on Brooke’s backpack became caught in the chair as she tried to disembark, causing her to be pulled with the chair. The company is cooperating with police and reviewing safety procedures to prevent future accidents.
Japanese authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
