Tiheshace Greene, a 44-year-old woman from Ladson, lost her life early Monday morning following a devastating wrong-way collision on Interstate 26 in Charleston County, according to officials with the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
The crash occurred around 12:44 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of I-26 near the 216-mile marker. Authorities said Greene was riding as a passenger in one of the vehicles involved when the collision took place. She was pronounced dead at the scene, with the coroner reporting that she suffered fatal blunt force injuries as a result of the impact.
The incident also claimed the life of Nicholas Smith, a 26-year-old man from North Charleston. Smith, who was driving the other vehicle, was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina, where he later died from his injuries at approximately 8:18 a.m. the same day.
Investigators said the crash involved a 2019 Volkswagen and a 2008 Chevrolet SUV. Preliminary findings indicate that the Volkswagen was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes before striking the SUV.
At this time, authorities have not released details clarifying which individual occupied each vehicle beyond noting Greene was a passenger and Smith was the driver. The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wrong-way crash.
