Authorities have confirmed the identity of one of two teenagers who lost their lives during a deadly shooting in Seattle’s Rainier Beach area. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 17-year-old Traveiah Houfmuse, who investigators say suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Officials reported that both teenagers who died were enrolled at Rainier Beach High School. As of now, no suspects have been taken into custody.

The shooting occurred on January 30 near a bus stop close to the school, and detectives have not disclosed whether gang activity may have played a role, stating the investigation remains active. Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes said officers and investigators are dedicating significant effort to solving the case but declined to discuss possible connections that could affect the inquiry.

In response to the tragedy, community organizations have stepped forward to support students, families, and residents. The Progress Pushers, a nonprofit group based in Federal Way that focuses on youth outreach and violence prevention, provided assistance and organized events in the neighborhood following the incident.

The organization hosted a community circle designed to bring people together to mourn, heal, and encourage shared responsibility in preventing further violence. The group works alongside local schools and collaborates with other organizations to respond to violent incidents involving young people.

Jeremy Winzer, who leads community violence intervention and youth support for the nonprofit, said he has known both teens since they were in elementary school through educational and sports programs. He urged the public to refrain from judging the victims and instead focus on creating safer environments for young people.

Winzer also expressed worry about the possibility of retaliation following the incident. Social media posts circulating after the shooting appear to show teenagers displaying firearms while claiming to attend memorials for those killed, raising fears that others could be targeted.

Seattle police have increased patrols in the Rainier Beach neighborhood as part of efforts to reassure residents and discourage further violence. The department confirmed that its mobile precinct will remain stationed in the area for at least three months, extending beyond its originally planned one-week deployment.

Investigators continue to encourage anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist with the case.
