Isaac Wilson Shirley, an infant from Jackson who was not yet a year old, has died from injuries suffered in a traffic collision that occurred last month in Amador County, California. Authorities confirmed the child passed away five days after the crash.

According to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office, the collision happened on January 24 along Highway 16, roughly two and a half miles east of Carbondale Road, during conditions of heavy fog. The California Highway Patrol reported that two vehicles collided at about 2 a.m.

Investigators said a black Hyundai Elantra traveling east, driven by a 24-year-old woman from Jackson, crossed over double yellow lines for reasons that remain unclear. The driver attempted to avoid a collision by braking and moving toward the shoulder, but the vehicle’s front left side struck the front left of a westbound silver Honda Fit.

The Honda was being driven by a 33-year-old Jackson woman, and the baby was a passenger in that vehicle, according to CHP. Emergency crews had to extricate both drivers, who were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Authorities noted that safety restraints were in use by both women.

Officials stated that neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have contributed to the crash, and no arrests have been made. The California Highway Patrol said the investigation is still ongoing, and a final collision report has not yet been completed.
