Carlton Octavius Duncan, a 20-year-old Birmingham resident, was identified as the victim found deceased inside a crashed vehicle in the city’s Ensley community, authorities confirmed. Birmingham police initially responded to what was believed to be a traffic accident before learning the death was the result of gunfire.

Officers from the West Precinct were dispatched shortly before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to the 1400 block of 29th Street following reports of a two-vehicle collision. At the scene, police located an overturned car with Duncan inside, unresponsive. A second vehicle involved in the incident was discovered nearby but was unoccupied.

The crash was first treated as a fatal traffic incident, and Duncan was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:39 p.m. Later that afternoon, just before 4:30 p.m., investigators were informed by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office that Duncan had suffered a gunshot wound, prompting the case to be reclassified as a homicide.

The investigation remains in its early stages, and no arrests have been announced. Duncan’s death marks the fourth homicide recorded in Birmingham this year. Across Jefferson County, officials have documented a total of eight homicides so far.
