Juan Santos Castro, a 75-year-old man, lost his life after being struck by a vehicle along Bastrop Highway in Austin, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026, at about 2:16 p.m. when Austin Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Bastrop Highway in the northbound lanes. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services also responded and attempted to provide emergency medical care, but Castro was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver involved in the crash remained at the location, showed no signs of impairment, and fully cooperated with investigators. Officials noted that this case represents Austin’s seventh fatal traffic incident of 2026, accounting for seven deaths so far this year. At the same point in 2025, the city had recorded five fatal crashes resulting in five fatalities.

The investigation remains active, and authorities cautioned that preliminary findings could change as additional details are reviewed.
