Kentre, a 3-year-old boy, was killed during a hostage situation at an apartment complex in south Las Vegas early Tuesday morning. Police were called just after 1:15 a.m. after reports of a man assaulting a woman while attempting to take the child.

As officers arrived, the suspect took Kentre hostage inside a residence and pointed a gun at him while approaching law enforcement. Officers fired at the man, who also shot the child.

Emergency crews transported Kentre to a hospital, but he did not survive. The boy’s mother later confirmed his identity, and police continue to investigate the incident.
