Marissa Burke, 39, was killed Thursday after being struck by a vehicle while walking along Route 55 in the Town of Beekman, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the crash occurred near Gardner Hollow Road shortly before noon when they were called to reports of a pedestrian being hit. Investigators determined that Burke had exited a Dutchess County LOOP bus and was attempting to cross the highway when the collision happened.

Authorities stated that Burke was struck by a westbound 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Early findings suggest the failure to yield to a pedestrian was a key factor in the crash, though the investigation is still ongoing.

Burke was rushed to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver of the Jeep, who was the only person inside the vehicle, was not hurt.

As of Friday morning, officials said no charges have been filed. The sheriff’s office and its crash investigation unit continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Route 55 remained closed for about three hours as deputies conducted their initial on-scene investigation. Anyone with information related to the crash has been asked to contact the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
