Fatal Central, South Carolina train crash death of James O’Neill – Obituary
Authorities in Central are investigating a deadly incident after a pedestrian was struck by a train Saturday morning. The collision occurred at approximately 9:45 a.m. along Watkins Street near West Main Street, in the area behind Trackside Tire & Auto.
Pickens County Coroner Andrew Wilson confirmed the victim was 57-year-old James O’Neill, a resident of Central. O’Neill was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Emergency crews and investigators responded to the location, temporarily affecting rail traffic in the area. By around 12:10 p.m., officials reported that the railway had reopened and normal traffic flow had resumed.
The Pickens County Coroner’s Office is working alongside Norfolk Southern and the Central Police Department to determine the circumstances leading up to the fatal incident. Additional information will be released as the investigation continues.
