Michael Hawkins, a 65-year-old man from Natchez, lost his life late Friday night after the ambulance transporting him was struck head-on along Interstate 55 near Wesson. Authorities confirmed that Hawkins was a patient inside the ambulance at the time of the collision and died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the incident occurred when a pickup truck traveling the wrong direction entered the northbound lanes of I-55 and collided directly with the oncoming ambulance. The impact caused severe damage and left multiple individuals injured.

Two Pafford EMS crew members who were inside the ambulance were critically hurt in the crash. They were identified as Joe Case, 48, of Brookhaven, and Jonathon Harveston, 23, a Louisiana resident. Both were transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for treatment, with Case being airlifted due to the severity of his injuries. No further updates on their medical conditions have been released.

The pickup truck involved in the crash was a 2013 Ford F-150 driven by 38-year-old Terencio Powell of Terry. Troopers reported that Powell was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes at the time of the collision. He was also airlifted to UMMC for medical care, and his condition has not been disclosed.

Mississippi Highway Patrol officials stated that charges are expected to be filed against Powell as the investigation continues. The crash remains under active review as authorities work to determine all contributing factors surrounding the deadly incident.
