Authorities in Wood County have confirmed that 76-year-old Laurie Harberson was found deceased in a remote rural area, bringing an end to a silver alert that had been issued during the search for her.

Investigators believe Harberson lost her life after being exposed to severe winter weather conditions that recently affected the region. Her SUV was discovered lodged against a Wood County Electric power line near County Road 4539, indicating she had become stranded.

According to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office, Harberson’s body was located in a heavily wooded area roughly half a mile away from her vehicle. The discovery was made on Saturday, one day after deputies initially began searching the area.

Officials said the search began Friday when a person installing corn feeders on nearby property came across the abandoned SUV and notified authorities. Although deputies canvassed the surrounding land at that time, Harberson was not found until the following day.

Harberson had been reported missing on January 23. Her death has been attributed to exposure, and no foul play is suspected at this time.
