Tavion Hyman, 23, was killed early Sunday morning after a shooting at an apartment complex in Hearne, according to law enforcement officials. Officers with the Hearne Police Department were called to the Eastside Apartment complex on South Riley Street around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 8, 2026, after receiving reports of gunfire.

When police arrived, they found Tavion Hyman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the suspected shooter has been identified as 23-year-old Monterrius Smith Jr., who allegedly fled the area shortly after the incident. Authorities have described Smith Jr. as armed and dangerous and are actively searching for him.

Police reported that Smith Jr. was last seen driving a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu bearing Texas license plate SMG5523. Anyone who may know his whereabouts or has information related to the shooting is urged to contact the Hearne Police Department at 979-279-5333.
