Nigel Vaughn dies in fatal Fall River shooting
Fatal Fall River shooting death of Nigel Vaughn – Obituary
Nigel Vaughn, a 40-year-old Fall River resident, was fatally shot during an encounter with police early Sunday morning, an incident that also left two officers injured. Authorities said the confrontation unfolded shortly after midnight on the 300 block of Linden Street following a report of an armed man sitting in a vehicle outside a residence.
According to a joint statement from the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office and the Fall River Police Department, three officers arrived at the scene and made contact with Vaughn. Police said he resisted during a search, leading to a physical struggle.
During that altercation, investigators say Vaughn discharged a firearm, striking one officer in the elbow and hitting another officer’s bulletproof vest in the abdomen area. Officers returned fire, wounding Vaughn.
Police attempted life-saving measures at the scene before Vaughn was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Officials stated that the firearm recovered from Vaughn had been modified to operate in a manner similar to a fully automatic weapon. Both injured officers were treated at a hospital and later released.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities have not yet made body camera footage from the incident public.
