Fatal Portland police shooting death of Erik D. Sherrer – Obituary

Authorities in Portland have released the name of the man who was killed during an officer-involved shooting last week. Police identified the deceased as 57-year-old Erik D. Sherrer, a resident of Portland.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, the shooting occurred on February 5 as officers attempted to carry out an arrest warrant at Sherrer’s apartment in the Pearl District. The warrant stemmed from an earlier incident on January 31 at a grocery store in northeast Portland, where investigators say Sherrer allegedly confronted a uniformed security guard, falsely claimed to be a U.S. Secret Service agent, pointed a handgun, and pulled the trigger. Police reported that the firearm did not discharge.

Officials said Sherrer fled after a brief altercation with security personnel at the store, leaving behind an instrument case. Inside the case, officers later found a loaded shotgun, which was seized as evidence. Police also stated that threatening messages referencing President Donald Trump were written on the shotgun shells.

After identifying Sherrer as the suspect, investigators obtained an arrest warrant. When tactical officers attempted to serve the warrant days later, they reportedly spent time negotiating with him before deploying gas to force him out of his apartment. Police said Sherrer exited the residence while holding a handgun, at which point two officers fired, fatally wounding him.

The incident remains under review as part of standard procedures following an officer-involved shooting.
