Caleb Carter, 20, was killed in an accidental shooting at the Perkins Rowe parking garage in Baton Rouge on Monday, February 9. The tragedy occurred on the second floor of the garage behind the Cinemark theater, where Carter had met with a friend.
Authorities reported that Carter was struck when a firearm accidentally discharged. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the friend, Chad Howard, 20, stayed at the scene and told investigators the shooting was unintentional and involved a 9mm handgun.
After the incident, the gun was thrown to a lower level of the parking structure but was later recovered. Investigators verified that the firearm had been reported stolen through the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Howard was arrested and booked on charges including negligent homicide, possession of stolen property, and obstruction of justice. The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office identified Carter and responded to the scene shortly after 9:40 p.m., confirming his death.
This incident underscores the dangers of mishandled firearms and the devastating consequences that can follow even a momentary lapse in caution.
