Fatal Duluth, Minnesota shooting death of Darius Handy – Obituary
Darius Handy, 33, of Duluth, was found fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in what police say may be part of a series of violent events that unfolded over several hours in the city.
According to authorities, officers responded around 3:40 p.m. to the 400 block of Piedmont Avenue, where Handy was discovered inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that same day, St. Louis County deputies were involved in a separate but potentially connected incident on the 7900 block of Grand Avenue. Sheriff officials said deputies attempted to stop a vehicle that was being driven recklessly at approximately 9:40 p.m. The driver fled, leading to a pursuit that ended near North 78th Avenue West after a PIT maneuver caused the vehicle to spin out.
Law enforcement officials reported that gunfire was exchanged between deputies and the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle. The driver was shot and died at the scene. Authorities believe the individual may be responsible for Handy’s killing earlier in the day, though the suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
Officials stated that deputies were not aware of any connection to the earlier homicide at the time they initiated the traffic stop. No deputies were injured during the exchange.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is handling the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting. Additional details, including the name of the man killed by deputies, are expected to be released as the investigation continues.
