A Philadelphia man lost his life in a row home fire in the Mayfair neighborhood late Tuesday night. Authorities identified the victim as 68-year-old Thomas Yust.
Firefighters responded just before 11:30 p.m. to the 3200 block of Teesdale Street after reports of heavy smoke. Upon arrival, crews discovered dark, thick smoke pouring from the first floor and found Yust deceased inside the home. Seven other residents managed to escape without injury.
Family members said Yust had faced a difficult period in recent months and had been out of contact for nearly two months before the fire. The relative who confirmed his identity to Action News described being shocked by the news and said the family is seeking some comfort in knowing he is now at peace.
The cause of the fire and Yust’s death remain under investigation. Philadelphia officials noted this may be the city’s ninth fatal fire this year and continue to offer free smoke alarms to residents to prevent further tragedies.
