Authorities in Orangeburg County have confirmed the identity of a pedestrian who lost his life after being struck by a vehicle early Friday morning. The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office reported that the victim was 45-year-old Francis Simmons of Eutawville.

Officials said Simmons died at the scene following the collision. Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle determined that the incident was accidental.

According to reports, the crash occurred at approximately 12:50 a.m. along U.S. 301 close to Dempsey Road. Investigators say a 2018 Mazda SUV traveling south on the highway hit Simmons while he was in the roadway.

The driver of the Mazda was not injured in the incident.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
