School officials in the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District have identified 17-year-old Cobretti Rae Rodriguez as the student who died after being struck by a vehicle earlier this month in Harlingen, Texas.
Police say the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on March 1 in the 2800 block of North Expressway 83. Officers with the Harlingen Police Department responded to reports of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle and later determined the victim to be Rodriguez.
Emergency medical personnel transported Rodriguez to a nearby hospital for treatment, but he later succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the crash.
Rodriguez was a junior at San Benito High School and actively participated in the Greyhound Athletic Program. School officials described him as a student whose kindness and dedication left a meaningful impression on those who knew him.
To honor his memory, the scoreboard lights at Bobby Morrow Stadium were scheduled to remain on during memorial services held Monday and Tuesday.
Family and friends gathered for visitation on Monday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home, with a rosary held at 7 p.m. that evening.
A funeral mass was scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in San Benito. School leaders extended their condolences to Rodriguez’s loved ones, remembering him for the friendship, compassion, and loyalty he shared with his community.
