Fatal Prince George’s County, Maryland car crash death of Douglas Orlando Smith – Obituary

Authorities with the Maryland State Police are examining a deadly two-vehicle collision that claimed the lives of two people late Sunday night in Prince George’s County.

Douglas Orlando Smith, 39, a resident of Brandywine, Maryland, was driving a Nissan Maxima involved in the crash and was declared dead at the scene. A passenger riding in Smith’s vehicle also died at the location, though officials have not yet released that person’s name while they wait to notify family members. The driver of the other vehicle, a Freightliner tractor-trailer, was not hurt.

The incident occurred on March 9, 2026, at approximately 11:58 p.m. Troopers from the Maryland State Police Forestville Barrack responded to reports of a serious crash along the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 301 near Brandywine Road.

Early findings from investigators indicate that both the Nissan driven by Smith and the Freightliner truck were traveling south on Route 301 when, for reasons that remain unclear, the Nissan collided with the rear of the tractor-trailer.

Following the crash, authorities shut down lanes on the highway for about five hours while investigators worked at the scene and gathered evidence. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
