A close-knit Evergreen community is mourning the loss of 67-year-old Michael Longfellow, who was killed in a hit-and-run crash along Highway 74 near Kerr Gulch Road on the evening of Saturday, March 14. The Colorado State Patrol reported that Longfellow was walking eastbound and crossing traffic when he was struck by at least one vehicle, which did not stop. His body was discovered the following afternoon around 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.
Longfellow, who had intellectual disabilities, was a familiar and cherished figure in Evergreen. Friends and neighbors recall his gentle nature, daily walks to local businesses, and the warm relationships he built across the community. Many residents routinely offered him rides, food, or water, reflecting the strong bond he shared with those around him.
Authorities are actively investigating the crash and have asked the public for assistance in locating the driver. Troopers believe the suspect vehicle may have sustained front-end or windshield damage. Additionally, they are seeking information about a white sedan, possibly a 2010 model, traveling eastbound on Highway 74 at the time.
