A tragic shooting has claimed the lives of 12-year-old Jericho Mangual and his 47-year-old mother, Tania Mangual, prompting grief and support efforts within their community.

According to police, the incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on March 28 near 30 W. Wilbeth Road in Akron. Officers arriving at the scene discovered a vehicle that had crashed into trees and was partially engulfed in flames.

Jericho was found inside the car with fatal gunshot wounds. Tania, who had been driving and was also shot, was transported to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

A two-year-old child who was also in the vehicle was not harmed.

Investigators said a 911 caller reported being shot at and was able to provide key details that helped identify a suspect. Authorities later named 28-year-old Brandon Casto as the person of interest. He subsequently turned himself in to the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office.

Casto is now facing multiple charges, including aggravated murder and felonious assault, and is being held in custody. Officials have not yet disclosed a motive or confirmed any relationship between the suspect and the victims.

In response to the tragedy, Barberton City Schools announced that counselors would be available to support students and staff, as Jericho was a student at Barberton Middle School.
