Claudia Balmaseda Orellanes, 33, of Coral Gables, died Saturday morning after a boating accident in Biscayne Bay near West Point. She was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash.

Authorities said a 27-foot boat, operated by 54-year-old Neil D. Schwabe of Coconut Grove, lost control near the Nixon Beach Sandbar. Both Schwabe and Balmaseda Orellanes were thrown into the water and struck by the vessel. Schwabe was rescued and taken to a local hospital, while Balmaseda Orellanes succumbed to her injuries.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. Officials offered condolences to the family and confirmed that no further details have been released regarding Schwabe’s condition.
