Authorities have confirmed that the man killed in a police standoff in north-eastern Victoria was 56-year-old Dezi Freeman.
Freeman, who had been on the run for seven months following the fatal shooting of two officers in Porepunkah last August, was located at a property in Thologolong on Monday morning. Victoria Police’s Special Operations Group engaged Freeman in a three-hour standoff, during which officers deployed firearms, non-lethal baton rounds, and tear gas.
The confrontation ended when Freeman was fatally shot. Police investigations into the incident, including his movements since the previous fatal shootings and the impact of nearby bushfires, are ongoing. The families of the officers killed last year have chosen not to comment at this time.
