Fatal Harris County, Texas shooting death of Monae Brooks – Obituary

Authorities in Harris County have confirmed that 32-year-old Monae Brooks, a mother of two, was fatally shot in a disturbing incident that unfolded in front of her young children.

The shooting occurred Wednesday morning in the Highland Creek Ranch neighborhood along Rusty Ridge Lane. According to investigators, events leading up to the tragedy began earlier that day when a resident reported seeing a woman walking with a firearm, later identified as Brooks through home surveillance footage.

Officials said Brooks herself contacted law enforcement prior to the incident, reporting that a bullet had been left on top of her vehicle. Her mother later shared that Brooks had been dealing with mental health challenges in the days before the shooting.

As a deputy was en route to take the report, emergency calls began coming in about gunfire in the area. Authorities said Brooks was driving with her 8-year-old daughter, 4-year-old son, and their dog when she encountered a man driving a van towing a trailer.

Surveillance footage showed the van pulling aside to allow Brooks to pass, but instead, she stopped her vehicle and began shouting at the driver. Investigators say the confrontation escalated when Brooks retrieved a handgun from her car, prompting the other driver to draw his own weapon and fire.

Witnesses described a chaotic and heartbreaking scene. One neighbor reported hearing gunshots before rushing outside and seeing the children inside the vehicle, visibly distressed.

Officials stated that Brooks and the driver did not appear to know each other. After the shooting, the man remained at the scene, called 911, and cooperated with authorities. It has not yet been determined whether any charges will be filed.

Child Protective Services confirmed that Brooks’ children have since been placed in the care of relatives as the investigation continues.
